Uncanny: Through the looking glass.
The Uncanny is a mixture of the familiar and unfamiliar that is strange and difficult to explain” it comes from the German word unheimliche. The uncanny creates a sense of fear by dancing along the line of what is fantasy and what is reality. I have based this photo series on Catoptrophobia, the fear of mirrors, the short story “The Reflection in the mirror” and the notion of the doppelgänger. Those you suffer from catoptrophobia fear something coming out of a mirror or seeing something that’s not quite their reflection looking back at them. It is said that if we were to see a clone of ourselves, we wouldn’t recognise it because we perceive ourselves differently to how we actually appear. I achieved this photo set by working with natural and artificial lighting, angles, camera settings, movement, water and mirrors. I made the photos black and white to highlight the shadows.
